III. Questions and Answers (top)
Why is there a Student Computer Initiative?(top)
FSU instituted the Student Computer Initiative (SCI) to to ensure that one's computer does not impede academic growth. As computers have become more of a focal point in daily academic life, it must be able to handle today's applications and online resources. Simply put, not having a capable computer can divert valuable time and resources away from your studies.Do I have to comply with the SCI? (top)
No. The Student Computer Initiative (SCI) is only strongly recommended. However, any machine that does not meet the minimum requirements cannot be guaranteed seamless integration into the FSU network. Machines that don't meet the minimum requirements may not be able to access FSU's online classroom resources. Additionally, repair services may be delayed on older machines. How can I find out my computer's specs? (top)
PC: Right click on "My Computer" and select Properties.Mac: Click on the "Apple logo" in the upper left hand corner of your screen and then the "about this Mac"

What if my computer doesn't meet the SCI specs? (top)
If your computer does not meet the minimum requirements it is strongly suggested, at the least, that you upgrade your system. Typically, upgrading your RAM and operating system are two of the best things you can do to improve performance. Students may want to consider the purchase of a new machine if their current machine doesn't meet the minimum specifications. The benefits of a new machine are that it will last for many years without needing upgrades as well as having a new warranty.Should I upgrade my computer or buy new? (top)
This should be decided on a case by case basis. In our experience, computers that are a less than a year old that still have a warranty should be fine. Anything more than a year old and you may want to look into the option of purchasing a new computer. The biggest setback we have seen with students and older machines is that their computer is not up to date enough to work with today's applications and that the warranty has expired. This can lead to longer repair times as out of warranty parts take more time to get.Is it better to have a desktop or laptop? (top)
While the trend favors laptops everyone has different computer needs. Desktops are less expensive and provide more upgrade options. They are used primarily by avid gamers and multimedia producers. Current laptops are now very fast and powerful and have come down in price. They offer students the ability to take their computer to class, the library, coffee shops, study sessions and more. Are there any recommended specs? (top)
FSU has recommended computer specifications. These specifications are meant to last a student for four years and beyond with minimal need for upgrade investment.| Processor | Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz or AMD equiv. |
